Eheim 2217 Maintenance

Ok, I just purchased 2 new eheim 2217's and the direction said to take out the thin pad after the first 2 weeks, which was today.
The question is, how should I shut off my canister and what should I do to get it restarted?
I don't want my motor to burn out, or any water on the floor.
FYI - I have the model with the 2 quick disconnects...

Howdy,

1. pull plug
2. close valves
3. open canister
4. remove carbon pad
5. close canister
6. open valves
7. plug into outlet
