I needed to replace a fluval 405 for my planted 36g bowfront and since the 2217 was only $116 I decided it was time to see what all the hype is about. When I received the canister the plastic that held one of the metal clips was broken which isnt a big deal, amazon is overnighting a new one for free. It looks as though the broken plastic wouldnt cause an issue but i was wondering if this is something that commonly happens with this model?

No, mine came in perfectly good shape and has not had a single issue in 4 years of running thus far. Clean mine about once a month.

I would say it's not common on a brand new filter but I've purchased used ones that had part of the plastic broken. The latch still worked properly when latched but falls off when servicing the filter.

Only time I have seen that happen is with abuse or neglect...

I will say that I wasn't the most gentle when it came to cleaning mine but never had a problem, first time cleaning my FX5 I snapped three of the locking roll pins.

That's an issue of poor packaging or shipping, not of poor general quality. I've had filters broken during shipment before.

I got one of those 116$ eheim 2217's from amazon too. What a deal! I always worry about getting broken stuff, as I hate to deal with the return and resend wait (Amazon is great though)... Luckily nothing seems broken on mines (knock on wood). Looking at the plastic that hold the metal clips I can see how those could snap off.
