Ok, I'm looking for the most cost effective filtration for my 125g. The only occupant is a 2.5" jag. I already have a mag 350 canister, and a 350gph powerhead with a sponge prefilter, and am looking to add to this. I don't plan on adding any tankmates, but when this guy gets bigger I'm going to want more filtration. The price for one eheim is just a little more than two AC110's, so I'm looking for some opinions. Sorry if this has been brought up before.

eheim i just baught my 2nd 1 for my 110 and it is the best for biological and let me tell great all around strong filter and this is coming from a guy who runs 2 fx5's on my 240 lol merry xmas

Ehiem is the better filter but I don't think it will provide you with the mechanical filtration you'll need with a large jag. I would go with the two AC110s they will provide you with adiquate biofiltration and will do the job mechanically.

What if I set up the mag for mechanical only (along with the powerhead w/sponge) and the eheim for bio only? Is the 2 AC110 + mag 350 still a better setup?

Provided you do not add any more fish, I think you should be OK with the 2217. ACs won't provide much bio filtration, since the bio media it contains is relatively small. If you are doing regular (weekly) water changes, I don't think you would need more mechanical filtration -- as long as you have the bio filtration covered.

I would personally go with a 2217, over two AC 110s.

Actually 2 AC110s have more media volume then a single 2217.

The 2217 is 6 liters or 1.58g about half of that is biomedia.

The AC110 has a area for media that measures 10" x 3.75" x 7" which is 1.13g. The sponge takes up half that area so the other half can be all biomedia.

Hmm, though it is arguable if two ACs would do the same job (bio filtration-wise) as 2217. I would doubt it, since AC has its place (*mainly* mechanical filtration), and 2217 has its (*mainly* bio filtration).

well, shoot. maybe I should get an AC110 now and then in a few more months get the eheim. If only an fx5 would fit in my stand :(

I hate how loud the HOBs can be so I would go with the eheim. You can always buy the ac110 or similar later on if you need more filtration, but like someone said you should just be able to do regular water changes to take care of that problem.

I use one AC110 that covers the mechanical, and one Eheim 2217 that covers the Bio. 100 gal with one large Flowerhorne. Works great! ;)
