For 40 bux more would you guys buy a 2227 instead of a 2217? I know the 2217 comes with media but haven't looked to see if the 2227 does. Any comments and suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!!

There's not a simple answer with the info you've given us. Is this the only filter you will be using? What size tank? What kind & how many fish?

The 2217 is an excellent filter as it can be filled with appropriate media for what you need to accomplish.

The 2227/2229 filter is for biological media only!! It isn't cheap but can be used as a second filter on a tank.

I have a 2217 & a 2229 and am happy with both filters. If you need a filter that does both mechanical & bio, I would definitely recommend the 2217.

2217 work so well in my 40 gallon tank.

The tank is a 180 gallon. I was planning on getting 2 2217 to start with probably. Right now I just have mollies and platies (29g) and I will probably stay with the community fish theme with fish around that size too.

Well Eheim claims the 2217 will filter a 159 Gallon tank. So theoretically two will do 318G tank....but if you are going to be using a lot of live plants, it may not be sufficient. Or if you decide to heavily stock your tank or switch to bigger fish, you may have to upgrade to more/larger filters.

Anybody else have any opinions?

I've got a 2217 on my 130 (with a few other filters), and I love it. I put it on my tank last December, and took it apart once for cleaning (although it wasn't necessary - my mistake for the blockage).

The output has slowed down but it is still decent, despite my lack of upkeep. I really like the spraybar too... the initial output was INTENSE, too much for the fancy goldfish I thought, so I had to direct it appropriately. I just wish the input tube didn't say "Eheim" on it, and the transparent green colour isn't as cool as black.

All in all, I'd recommend it. Compared to my Fluval canisters (forget the models), it is quieter and just seems a lot higher quality. My one complaint is the Fluvals at least have baskets to put the media in, so easier access. If you get it, you definitely won't be disappointed.
