Just got my eheim 2217 and installed everything but im having trouble getting it start. According to the instructions, im suppose to prime but i have no idea what that is and the instructions are a little confusing. I try sucking the air out but that didnt work. The filter makes a squealin noise but no water is going in the filter. HELP

So, I filled the canister up with water and turn it on but that didnt work. That usually how i got my magnum 350 to work.
What I do with mine is hook everything up and then suck on the outlet hose. It should start a syphon that will fill everything. Just make sure you are holding the hose above the level of the tank or you will get water on the floor. Once it is all full (hoses and canister) place the outlet where you want it and plug it in.
It sounds like your impeller is dry. Since the impeller is at the very top, filling the canister won't necessarily work, you need to fill the hoses as well.

The best way to get Eheim 2217 started:
1. Close all of the quick connects. Make sure there's water in the inflow hose.
2. Disconnect all the hoses and bring the canister to sink.
3. Fully drain the canister until there's nothing inside
4. Bring it back to the tank and take out the outflow hose and empty it out. Leave this out of the water for now.
5. Open all the connections except for the outflow from the tank.
6. Reconnect everything.
7. Open the outflow hose from the tank and it should start filling up the tank. Wait for it until it fills up the tank.
8. Plug it in.
I have used this method for the 2217 and 2250 with great success. No sucking needed.
