I have a AC 70 for my 55gallon tank (1 oscar,1 green terror, 1 blood, 1 red tail shark, and one Sinibotia loach) and I was thinking about upgrading my filter system with a Eheim 2217 and the AC 70. Would that be too much for my tank?

Thanks,

you definitly need more filtration....and a bigger tank

I run a 2217 on a 30g,its not to much for your 55

Upgrade to a 75g or 100g in the future for your fish...

But eheim 2217 or 2234, 2236 are all good filter candidates...

The fish you have will eventually grow out to be big guys.... but in the mean time.. you need a better filtration system.. if 2217 is too expensive, try AC110

Thanks for the advice. I was looking to get a bigger tank probably a 90 or bigger. Which would be better the better filter, the AC110 or the eheim 2217?

AC 110 are great HOBs (Hang on back) filter.. while it will be more messy.... It is design for 110gallon tanks...

2217 however... is 160gallon? But its a diff story.. is a canister filter... They are design so that water is in a closed vacuum and water is more narrow than HOB filters... Personally I own a 2213 at the moment for my 60gallon and its doing a heck of a good job.. more so than my 2234..

With that said.. remember that you want to create a good current flow of water inside your tank.. AC 110 creates a better current, since its gives a waterfall effect. while canister filters don't give quite as good of a current inside the tank...

So to comment on whats best for you:

If you don't have fish that jumps like Arowana.. I'd say AC110 since its cheaper and does a good job.. (just clean the filter once a month) But if you ever go Arowana or any fish that you don't want jumping out... go canister...
Never-the-less.... it really depends on the price of the filter anyways.. if you find a 2217 that is cheaper than an AC110 by all means.. go 2217.. but AC110 is a decent filter..

Id go for the ac110. Great filter, way more turnover , And decent bio. Coupled with an ac70 it will easily handle your bio load.

The 2217 is a great choice. The AC110 would have been a great choice, as well, but I love my 2217. The only complaint about it is that it doesn't provide quite enough water movement for my liking. The fish don't seem to mind it, and it keeps parameters perfect, but I added a powerhead to my tank to help with circulation. Of course, I've never been happy with a single filter on ANY tank, because I like water pumping from more than one direction, so maybe it's just me being picky.
