Is the Eheim 2229 a better filter to control nitrites and ammonia in a overstocked tank since its strictly a bio-filter or would a pro 3 2080 be a better choice? I am currently running two eheim 2028's and an Emperor 400 in a 125g tank. (No nitrites or ammonia at this time just for prevention).
Any other suggestions?

The 2080 is one of the largest of the eheim series. I personally think the wet/dry filters are better, but the 2080 would be far more than you need for a 125. If you are looking for bio only, both of these filters will do a great job. The eheim 2078 is a better filter than the 2080 IMO, and can be run for wave maker, or 12 hour bio/mech alternation.
