So, I picked up an Eheim 2229 used out of curiosity. I have had a lot of canisters over the years and was curious if this could help me avoid setting up a new sump for a 55. The filter seems obnoxiously loud when filling at the end of the drain cycle. When it is running after filling and through the drain it is fine, but when is starts to refill it makes a really annoying buzzing sound. It seems to be that the impeller is pushing around some air. It is similar to when a normal canister needs to purge remaining air in the canister. I have no experience with this type of filter, but have watched some YouTube videos and don't hear the same kind of sound (almost none at all actually). Any help on this topic or comments from any of you that have a similar model would be greatly appreciated. I may upload a YouTube video tomorrow so everyone can see/hear what I'm talking about. I set it up in the garage to clean it out, check for leaks, etc. as it is a used filter. I don't want to bring it in and set it up if it is going to remain that loud.

It would probably be helpful if you posted a video so we can hear what you are hearing.

One method I use to make sure there is no air in the 2229 is to unplug the mains (plug), let the filter completely fill with water until the breather pipe (center hose) is full of water. Plug the mains back in and let the filter cycle normally. This should purge any trapped air out of the system.

Do you have any media in the filter at this time? If so, please elaborate on type and where it is placed.

I was waiting on media until I installed on a tank. Video is posted below. I intend to use Eheim Substrate Pro Bio in the bottom 2 and Seachem Purigen in the top basket. I will put a prefilter on the intake. I want to use it for bio and do my mech with other filters. Does the media make a difference in noise level?

The above video shows the canister during the fill/drain cycle. I hope the audio is good enough for you to hear it well. The buzzing is obnoxious and will be problematic for the room I want to put it in even if the filter is functioning OK and not at risk of damage. I want it in my "boys room", which is where I watch football with the guys.

This video shows the output during the cycle. It is OK, but almost completely stops during the fill cycle. This worries me as I am afraid the pump is not cooling and being lubricated properly. I know the output will drop off when full of media. It is a little loud due to not having the spray bar installed and water level in the test container being a little low.

Thanks for you help. I hope to be able to make use of the filter, but I'm not out a ton if it does not work properly. It was an experiment in wet/dry canisters. I know they have mixed reviews, but some people seem to love them. Not my best Ehiem so far.

So I'm going to order new media tomorrow. I had enough of various media to fill it, but I think I want to go with BioMAX instead of the Substrate Pro. I'm not sure if this will make a difference in the noise issue (I didn't even think about it until deeda ask what I had in it), but if it doesn't work out I can use the media for another filter later or add it to my collection of "equipment experiment leftovers". Any input would be apreciated. Please check the video if you are courious about the noise I am referring to.

Thanks for reposting the videos.

In video 1, it sounds like the floater valve isn't seating properly when it is in the lowered position and that is causing the floater valve to vibrate. Here is a pic of the floater valve and the clear collar should be undamaged and supple.

In video 2, there should definitely be some water coming out of the output hose/line at all times. It is possible that the cleaning plug is missing in the side of the canister head. In the following picture, the pump head is removed from the canister body and is upside down. I use a small tube brush to clean the channel and make sure nothing is stuck inside. After a few years of use, my cleaning plug was a bit tattered and I replaced it with a rubber cork, cut to fit, because the replacement plug was too expensive.

Collar was missing altogether. Seals coated in petroleum jelly (I know this is common, but seems to be a measure to cover bad seals). Plug is not original. I guess this is what I get for buying used off eBay. May try to sell off as parts. I am disappointed I could not get a working model to see how well it works. I greatly appreciate the responses. I'm not out a lot, it is more the experience that I am disappointed in. I really wanted to give this thing a test drive.

You could always buy a new floater valve if you have the cash and you don't have any other missing parts. I've had mine for a few years now, it works reasonably well though it is a bit more finicky then the Classic models.
