I'm currently building a 350 gallons aquarium in my basement, I already have a Fluval fx5 and I want to add another filter. I know the 2080 proIII has a good filtering capacity for a tank this size but would the 2229 wet/dry be better to control ammonia and nitrite levels?

I have a 2180 ProIII and I would NOT buy another one. It flows about 1/4 if what your FX5 and there are other problems. I also would not get the 2229 it really doesn't work that well and its no real advantage over a regular canister filter. I would buy another FX5 or I would buy a Rena XP4. I have 2 XP4's and they are so much easier to maintain compared to the ProIII. I did fill My XP4's with Ehiem media.

I have a 2229 and a 2080 filtering a 125g planted discus tank. The 2229 is an engineering (wet/dry) marvel and although I have noticed that others have had issues with it, it has worked very well for me. It tend to be less quiet than the 2080 and it can drain more CO2 out of the water than you can possibly fill in - which is an issue if you are into plants.

HOWEVER I would go with the 2080; its a later edition and has very high capacity. Its very quiet and very easy to maintain. One issue I have is the mechanical filtration with could be better, but perhaps your FX5 can handle that.
