Hi.. hope people can contribute..
I have an eheim 2260 amd 2262

Both have mech pro at bottom.. subpro for bio filtration in the middle and that green mesh stuff on top.
Q..
just wondered if the filter works better with or with out it.
If I took it out.. I could put more bio media in.. but there designed to have the green mesh at the top right which helps polish the water?

I also think with out it.. less gunk gets trapped in the canister amd therefore the water inside stays a little bit cleaner. ??

Hi Ade,
Polish the water? dont believe that one, it just a buzz phrase.
I fill some of my canisters with nothing but ceramic noodles and create strictly a biological filter. I have some that have been running for years, without any maintainence what so ever.

Ade, I replaced the Eheim Ehfi Fix (green floss) with enough Poret 20 ppi and 30 ppi sponge media to take up the space the Ehfi Fix filled with excellent results. You could use a similar product if one is available. I just cut the sponge media in a circular shape so it was a snug fit in the canister.

You actually want as much gunk as possible to get trapped by the filter, that is its purpose. How often the filter needs to be cleaned depends on the bio-load of the tank. I find that 3-4 months is average for my particular tank setups. If you notice the filter traps a large amount of dirt and debris, more frequent cleaning is required. Just because you can't see the dirt in your filter, it still impacts the quality of the tank water and can contribute to higher nitrate levels and the health of the fish.

Any polishing should be done before the water reaches your bio media. If you put floss or foam in the top basket, all of the waste will get trapped below it - clogging the surface pores of the bio media faster and making it much less efficient. Your mech media should all be in the bottom basket (with the coarse layer below the finer foam or floss), and the top two baskets should be filled with your bio media (unless you use the middle basket for more floss). So you have the right idea Ade, ditch the green floss and replace it with 1-2L of matrix or some other bio media

Thanks for feedback every one;):D.. just needed some input before I loose the efi fix.

What a fantasic filter this is.
Knocks the socks of fx5 .
