I'm on the fence and can't decide.

My budget is super tight and I'm cheap, but appreciate quality too.

Was wondering if I should go ahead with my plan on getting the Eheim 2260 and skipping the Quick Disconnects?

I mean if the filter is set up properly I should only have to move/open it about twice a year. How vital could the Quick Disconnects actually be? Or am I missing something here?

Then fill it with bio-bale, pond matrix or pot scrubbies to get it filled cheaply.

I know there's way better things to fill it with but I can't afford it at all.

Or would I be better off trying to set up this used FX5 that I have thats missing the in and outputs and putting good media in it?

Guess I should add that this will be going on a 6 foot 120 gal that will have 2 ac110 available for mech filtration if I want, but then again the ac's could be used on other tanks as well.

thanks....

It is usually difficult to have all these qualities at the same time! :D

You already have the FX5, so just make the input & output from PVC and fill the baskets with preferred media.

I have the 2260/2262 and am very glad I got the Q.D.'s for it. There is no way for me to remove the filter to clean it without some kind of removable fittings.

You will need to service the filter more than twice a year, and without QD's you will create a siphon and spill water all over the inside of the stand when you take it off.

Eheim 2260.

Service one per year.

You can still upgrade with quick-disconnect valves later f you see need.

Fill with 5L mech, 5L substrat pro, 5L substrat

$200 worth of media from drs foster and smith

That doesn't really meet his requirements.

He'll spend more than that on fish. I guess I don't understand cutting corners when it comes to life-support systems.

You could get the 2262 for $80.00 more than the 2260 and have about twice the power and quick dis-connects. Thats the route I just took.
And nooooooooo. Its not the cheap way.

The 2262 was $430.00 and the media/bags/floss was $208.00
With Uncle Al's discounts plus free shipping, it cost me $604.00 total.

Eheim 2262 External Canister Filter w/valve set
Big Al's Filter Floss-20 Sq.Ft
Eheim Ehfimech- 5Liter
Eheim Substrat Pro 5 Liter
Eheim EhfiSubstrat - 5 Liter
Eheim Ehfifix- 5 Liter
And two Ehiem Filter Bag's F/2250/2260

Honestly I doubt he will spend $200 on fish. Obviously it depends on what he is planning to stock though, since some fish are extremely pricey.

I think if the FX5 functions properly, it will filter the tank fine, especially if you use the ACs.
The eheim is probably a better filter, but I think it is silly to use cheap media in it.
