I am looking to make a change with my 240 african tank that has a wet dry on it. I am either going to sell the tank and get a 300 tall with no overflows or cut out the overflows in the 240 and use/plug the holes. I dont know what large canister I want to run and would like some input. I plan to run 2 either 2262 or fx5. The 2262 is way pricy...and I feel that the fx5s would work but im worried about the sand ill have in the bottom of the tank. Is the fx5 pump on the bottom...can it get damaged if sand gets in the intake? Also I like the 2262 idea because with as much media as I can put in there perhaps I can go longer between opening it up to clean since it might not clog as fast. I saw a thread on here that a guy hasnt opened his up in over a year. Not having to open for maintenance is a big plus for me and that couple with the sand issue would help me justify the extra $ on the ehiems. Also what is the cheapest place to get the 2262's.

if i were you i would keep the sump and add a canister filter on top of the sump.

it doesnt matter which canister you choose if you place the intake/drain to close or
low to the sand it will suck it up damaging your impeller and magnet... if your
cichilds like to kick up sand i'd recommend placing the intake/drain high if not a lower
then the center should be good enough and not suck up any sand.

as for the canister maintenance going a whole year without cleaning it... ehh i wouldnt do that...
you should clean it at least once a month or every other month or so...

I have two xp3s along with my wetdry. It's not that the filter system doesn't work...I just don't like the setup anymore. I built the wetdry and it's pretty open so I have mold issues. I need water added pretty frequent so it makes the sucking sound a lot and it's getting old. The sump is so big it takes up most of the room in the stand and I have no room for extra top off water. For the drains to be silent I have to have the outflow of them in the sump under water and I use filter socks. Those socks constantly need cleaning. I want the room in the tank that the overflow towers tanke uo. So I'm ready for a switch since I think tue wetdry is overkill for these fish on this size tank. As for not wanting to open the canister that much...with the right setup I feel it can happen if the solids can brake down and dissolve into the water and be removed by frequent water changes. But it's not my goal to never open them up...or only once a year...just not every couple weeks.

As for the sand I thought that since the eheim pump is on the top the sand wouldn't make it to it...I wasnt sure on the fluval since the pump is on the bottom is it's intake down there too. My xp3s get sand in them but it stays at the bottom of the canister.
