I thought I would share a couple more pics of my 55G tank as it is now... Its changed quite a lot over the last 1.5 years. Settling in nicely with my fish.

Just took these now after cleaning the FX5... so its a little bit on the cloudy side in case youre wondering!

i thought that they would soon outgrow the 55g, but they are very happy, handtame, feeding well and healthy. also the filters seem to do the job well and for an oscar / cichlid tank, doing waterchanges every 2-3 weeks aint bad ;)

Nice looking fish, they do look healthy, but I can honestly say they aren't going to be that way much longer unless you upgrade your tank size or start seriously increasing your water change and vacuum routine.

You've got plenty of filtration on your tank, but as DasArab has pointed out, that's not really going to help with Nitrates.

they look quite well but as you state that the Os are 1.5 yrs old
but they look like 7-8" they must be stunted i guess
anyways for the betterment of your fish upgrade the tank to atleast a 90g+ and also increase the frequency of water changes

Beautiful Fish but you need to upgrade. 1 Oscar is only supposed to be in a 55 minimum they suggest more for the sake of your awsome fish GET A BIGGER TANK!:headbang2

thanks for the replies guys...
Yes I have test kits for both nitrates / nitrites (test tube kits, not the crappy litmus paper ones).

I mostly do WC's every two weeks... 3 weeks is a stretch I guess, but after testing the water its perfectly fine. (change carbon, zeolite, purigen with each WC etc..)

At present and for the last 1.5 years or so the fish have been more than happy in this tank, and yes they are gerowing and they will be upgraded, but at this point they are happy, clean healthy and fine :)

my oscars in the past have been 8-10"s in 1 year... and Oscars really need to be in less then 20ppm Nitrates and if you feed everyday or close to it, it is very unlikely that you are doing that, but....

your fish do look good so keep it up... :D

hey guys ... thank you for your concern.... I toptally understand where you coming from.
now understand where im coming from... so you know that im not irresponsible:

i have been keeping fish from the age of around 7 (admittedly goldfish at first then cichlids) this brings the tally up to about 20 years... 2 decades of spotless fish keeping (im 29 now).

this 55g is a grow out tank... and I was in the process of building a 7X3X3 tank in my basement (if youve seen my other thread).

The tank will come, but for now the fish are more than comfortable, the water is more than pure and they are more than happy. I was merely sharing pics of how wonderfull the setup is becuase personally in 20 years I havenet had such an easy tank (and we talking serious overstock and messy eaters here).

In the beginning, I had to do WC's every 2-3 days....becuase i had crappy internal filters... then I got the tetratec EX1200... which made it look good but on tests a week wasnt good... then I added the FX5 to the equation... testing the water after 3 weeks and my parementer were still well within the safe zone.

I mostly clean every week or every other week, taking out 40% of the water... it looks crystal clear... i change one of the cannisters and along with the bio I put zeolite, purigen and activated carbon... (following week the next cannister).

I personally think that I cannot be crapped on for mis-treating my fish and im sure that anyone with experience with an overfiltered tank would tell you the same.... before i got good filtration, someone telling me that my tank could go 2-3 weeks!!! I would have thought them mad... specially so with large oscars in it! ;)

Anyways... thats how it is

No ones crapping you out they are only concerned that 2 O's in a 55g tank with w/c's every 2-3 weeks is no where near enough. You could have 10 fx5's on that tank and the water would be crystal clear but it wont help with the NitrAtes. Everyone knows that Nitrates are teh bain of all O's. You live in London too, I'd almost put money on you having NitrAtes present in the tap water.
