Hi Guys, this is my new purchased EHEIM Canister DIY Denitrator. Just here to share this "new toy" of mine. The denitrator is converted from EHEIM 2215 cannister with some modification on the piping etc. Plz enjoy...

Insides the cannister are full with bioballs. The white color balls are deniballs that use to cultivate anaerobic bb...

A closer look at the custom head. The white tube is the water inflow compartment, with adjustable dripping control valve

Water dripping from the inflow tube. Currently setting as 1 drop per 2 seconds coz denitrator newly setup, and need to fully cultivate the anaerobic bb 1st...

I have also added an UV light & filter wool at the outflow pipe, to zap any potential pathogen or harmful bacteria cultivate in the denitrator, and filter the slime before the denitrified water back to the sump...:D Thanks for the viewing...:)

Nice project, thanks for sharing

I take it you are not using the pump but only the canister itself as a container?! Makes sense, because denitration requires very slow flow rates, just like you said. But your tank looks big ... why did you choose the small canister over a larger (e.g. 2260) container?

What was the reasoning for using bioballs and not sintered glass biomedia?

Obviously, you have put serious thought and planning into this, which is why I am so curious :)

Hi Harley, thx for the compliment...:) No, I do use a small pump to drip the water into the denitrator. The denitrator wasnt made by me, but by a LFS which use it for yrs for all their salt water tanks, and only available in this size... The reason they use only 2215 is becoz the flowing rate is slow enough to cultivate anaerobic bb, other model the flowing rate might be too fast...

The main reason that only bioballs are used, is becoz that during the denitrified process, slimy substances will occur and will clog the biomedia if the holes too tiny.. That's why the denitrators on the market mostly using bioballs only...

Thanks. Do you keep track of your nitrates over time? Please let us know the effect of the denitrator. Do you measure conductivity as well?

Thanks,
HarleyK

What was wrong with the AZOO Twin Tubes denitrator?

It looks like the it is plumbed up so that the pump in the Eheim just circulates the water in the filter and the water that flows out is just over flow of what it dripped in. Is that right?

Dose it work

Dose it work?
