ok, i decided to get some eheim classic canister filters for my 55 gallon tanks, but most people say that they are good for bio-only, so if i turm this into a bio-filter how would i keep it cleaner longer, what foam would i use to keep it clean,

also what filter should i get for the mechanical and chemical filtration. i thought about getting the emerors and just making them a chem. and mech. filter.

i need to get two of each, since i will have a 55 gal african cichlid tank and a 55 gal comm. tank. so any help would be great

Why be so specific and dedicated with the filtration?!? Run bios on all, run floss/polishers in each of them, the only thing I would change is the activated carbon media...keep that up top on the HOB.

Reason, most meds and buffers require removal of activated carbon...easier to remove on the HOB for sure.

I like Emperors, definitely a well thought out filtration unit, ACs are also very very good.

thats what is was going to do, just to turn the eheim into a bio-filter, but use the emperor as a chem and mech, just using foam pads and the carbon racks

but people say that the eheim are only good for bio-filtration , just wondering if getting a larger canister, i would be able to use it as both

My 55g is filtered by;

Fluval 404, basket 1- BioMax/Gravel rocks, basket 2- BioMax/BioMax, basket 3- SubstratPro/SubstratPro, and basket 4 SubstratPro/BioMax/Eheim EHFIMECH.

Whisper 60, with just sponges.

AquaClear 100/500, with sponge and a small bag of mixed media(SubstratPro, BioMax).

Stock list= Grammodes 6", 2xClown Pleco's 2-3", 3x2"-3" Convicts, Raphael Catfish 4", and a Bellycrawler Pike 3-4". Some are still growing.

sounds perfect, I am always curious why people want to dedicated three different filters to three different things. I say use them as recommended. With the exception usually being carbon unless its a brand new tank.
