I was thinking about using the "Eheim Canister Filter Classic Plus - 2217" rated for up to 160g. This will be used in my 75. I'll either use it as the only filter or in conjunction with an internal sponge filter. Tank will be used for a couple larger, robust type cichlids. Would you guys recommend I get this filter or look at a different one?

Yeah go for it, maybe double it up with a hang-on-back, but it should be fine by itself.

i had the 2217 on my 75 gallon with cichlids and it worked great (crystal clear water). i think its the best filter for 50-80 gallons

conjunction with an internal sponge filter

Sounds like a good combination to me.

sponge filters suck. they are so loud so i would screw those and grab one or two hobs

err, mine doesn't make any noise. ;)

Howdy,

I run a 2217 on my 40 gal, a buddy has two 2217s on his 75 gal. That's what I recommend  Awesome filters, you won't be disappointed!

Awesome filters and comfortably filter a 75g.
I run a 2217 stocked with different levels of eheim media and it is quite powerful with water flow! Almost silent operation.
