What media should I use in this thing? Got it from my dad, he always used the usual charcoal/sponge/generic unknown brand bio ball combo, but what should I use? I think I will bring the sponges back for mechanical media but what bio media should I use?

It's an excellent little filter. I would use either Eheim substrate pro, Biohome (preferably Biogravel to maximize space but any will do), or Seaqchem Matrix/de nitrate. The seachem media is pumice so if you can find pumice somewhere else like a garden store in the right size it's going to be equally good but cheaper.
Bioballs should go into the trash can.

Actually I was mistaken, I always used to think bioballs were what is actually substrat. Seems he always used substrat then. I always thought the weird plastic ball things were different.
Damn all of those are expensive, but I just ordered all of them, should be worth the price since I should be able to use the extra on other filters. Thank you

One tip, be careful when opening the lid. The mechanism is made of all plastic and can't take too much stress so don't be too rough.
Eheim Classic is a more robust filter to replace it with if it breaks btw.

Got it set up and it's running very nicely. I have it on a 20 long just because I'm breeding mollies and platies in it. Top level I have two fine sponges with a layer of carbon sandwiched between them, second level I put biohome, third I put substrat and then the bottom layer I put matrix. Spiked it with fritz. This sound good?
