My friend gave me his Eheim Ecco. I helped him set it up when he first got it. After a little over a year, he took it down after he said it was making a lot of noise and stopped working. I got a new impeller for it, but then I realized that the flow on these things are horrible. My friend said it has always been like that. I thought Eheims were suppose to be the best:confused: I just feel that I've been disappointed by Eheim products more than a couple of occasions.

Ehiem filters all have a lower than average flow rate. That doesn't mean they are bad filters. I love my Ehiem, but I know they don't create alot of flow so I pair it with a couple emperor HOB's, that way I get the flow I need and the awesomeness of the Ehiem. You cant beat the Ehiems!

My Eheim Ecco works great and is almost as silent as my classic. From two feet away I can't tell it is running. It ran dry for 48 hours and after refilling it runs just as quiet. It's a great filter.

sorry to hear is it still making strange noises? my 2262 is a BEAST when it comes to flow and its PACKKKKED with scrubbies. My 2229 is strong as well especially on the empty cycle.... never heard of them being weak on flow.

not diagreeing, just new to me to hear that!

My 2078 visually appears to have higher flow than my XP3 and Fluval 404. It visually appears to have less flow than my Magnum 350 with a new clean micron cartridge but the Magnum quickly slows to less flow then the Eheim.

Every filter slows with dirty media. Did you replace the media? What media are you using?

It's not making anymore noise. The impeller was shot when he gave it to me. So I got a replacement. It's just interesting that the impeller went out so quickly since I hear these things work forever. I threw out the filter pads so it has 1 empty tray and 2 trays filled with Eheim Substrat Pro.

The impeller is one of the things that replacement is normal "wear and tear" just like replacing brakes and tires on a car. Even a Ferrari needs to have its tires changed. But I have had my Eheims two years and haven't had to replace them yet.

Was he running it with sand? Sand has destroyed the impellers to most of the filters on those tanks with sand.

Yeah...but the impeller went out in about a year. My Fluval 405 has been using the same impeller since day one from 4 years ago and my tanks have sand. The only other experience with Eheim products that I've dealt with were their heaters which 3 out of 4 of them ended up getting stuck on the "ON" and wouldn't auto-shut off. I've just been pretty disappointed overall since everyone talks so highly of their products. I was looking to buy a larger Eheim filter later on in the future, but with all the disappointments, I'm really not impressed with them at all. The only thing I haven't been disappointed in is their Substrat Pro...and I'm just assuming that the BB are colonizing fine on that product. I feel like I may be the only guy who's having issues with this brand and I doubt it's user error as I treat these just like all my other equipment and they are still running strong.

Not sure the ecco should even be compared as a regular eheim. Not sure but I don't think I've ever had an impeller go out. Have now and had lots of filters, rena, fluval, eheim, marineland guess I've just been lucky.

Howdy,

I remember when Eccos first came out, and a buddy of mine also had flow problems. Looks like that hasn't changed in the past 20 (?) years.

Go Classic.
