Eheim filter media question.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you boil it, soak it, boil it, soak it etc ....leave it out to dry (bone dry) ...then yep.

Boil it to kill the SW bacteria? Soak it to clean..then do it a second time for good measure?

Just trying to under stand the "why". :)

My issue is that I can buy an eheim2217 (without media)for $100.00 only used for a few months.

If I pay $140.00 I will be given the eheim2217 with the media. The only issue is that the media was being used for a SW setup. So I'm now trying to figure out what deal is the better deal.

You would be fine as long as you clean them thoroughly.

Is the salt the issue or the different type of SW bacteria?

ah, both.
you don't want salt leaching out of the media
and you don't need the ammonia of all that dead bacteria either
clean it throughly and it will work like it was new

I will probably only have the eheim 2217 on the 90 gal. Don't I need more than 1 type of filter media? (If I go the Seachem Matrix route).

As for ammonia leaching out of the old media... I would cycled the filter first before using it with fish so I don't know if it would be an issue.
