i've just bought a eheim 2217 classic filter and it has come with all foam pads in it, i've got some seachem matrix tubes and i've also got some bio balls as well.
would it be better to replace some of the foam pads with the matrix and maybe bio balls and if so what order should i use them, thx :)

Should only be one filter pad in there. From bottom to top, pre filter, sponge, bio media.

Unless you want a water polishing pad but you will fight the clog if you do.

The classic series filters have a lot of options for using media. You can use all blue pads and put the white pad on top. You can use Ehfimech as 1st layer, then a couple blue pads, then any preferred bio media, then white pad.

Davew, always start filling the filter with the coarse mechanical media first. Is the Seachem matrix tubes bio or mechanical media? If it's bio, put it before the fine white filter pad.

I would not use bioballs in a canister filter myself.

In my eheim 2217, I have (from bottom to top) 1" of ehfimech prefilter, 2 blue pads, a ton of the eheim brand bio media and a white pad.

I disagree about the bioballs in a canister. You CAN have bioballs in a canister and it would provide good surface area as well as good flow through the canister. The debris and dirt would mostly pass through the bioballs and get onto the pads. Its probably less surface area than ceramic media, but still a good option.

ok thanks guys i will stick with the foam pads and use the seachem bio at the top under the white pad :)
