Im looking for some eheim 2028 filter pads locally but there are none available. Are there pads out there that I can use and cut to size or do I have to order them? Any help would be appreciated.

Foam bricks, cut to size and shove in filter. I dont waste money buying new pads anymore, just rinse out the foam pieces once a month and use a filterbag for the carbon. I used a peice of pantyhose, filled it with carbon then tied off the end, it sits in the filters with the foam blocks. Insted of 1" of foam pad to trap debris, you have 4" of pad. Pm me me if you want more details on the money saving filter improvments.

I stopped using the Eheim replacement pads a long time ago. I bought foam sheets and cut to fit just like Slippery K but I kept the Effimech. If you want to try and replicate the polishing pad, you can use quilt batting from the fabric store but this will clog up easy as it filters down very fine, and tends to fall apart during aggressive cleaning.
Another thing to try is foams with varying pore densities. Poret Foam is one that comes to mind and Laguna makes foam filter media for ponds in varying pore densities. Come to think of it, a pond supply would have it in larger sheets so it may be more cost affective. Poret Foam is pricey but you will never buy foam again and it comes in many pore densities.
The nice thing about using foam is its re-useability. Washing the foam out is simple and a good quality foam will last longer than any other media.
So, just buy some foam with 20ppi,30ppi and 40ppi and cut to fit using the lower number foam first followed by the larger numbers. PPI stand for Pores Per Inch.
