Eheim filters & drilled tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It depends on several factors:

First, how large are the drilled holes and second, where are the positioned....

For example, using a canister with a 1/2 inch intake on a 2 inch bulkhead may be difficult to set up and prone to leaking...

Also, I do not think a canister could be used with a drain on the bottom of the tank....

Canisters are meant to pull water from the tank, not have water drain down to the canisters....

Overall, it would probably be easier setting up a w/d or sump with a drilled tank...

Wanting to use Eheim filters with a drilled tank? Can this be accomplished and how.
Plug the drilled hole and set up canister according to manual :D

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking of putting a tank in the wall for viewing in two rooms. I have a couple of eheim pro III filters I want to use. I wonder if I drilled the tank on the each side could that work? I'm trying to avoid the filter hoses from front & back views.

buy bulhead and fittings. use barb connectors and plug and play!

I think you'll find that its gravity that pulls the water into a canister, the pump is used to push the water back into the tank. I dont see any reason how a canister couldnt be plumbed in to a tank as long as the correct sized fittings are used.

I have used a eheim 2028 on my 75 gal drilled, here is intake

the 1.5" pvc has a bushing that reduces it to 3/4" Iron pipe threads then i had a 5/8" ID hose barb, (the eheim hoses are 5/8" ID hoses)

here is return

I've drilled through the bottom for canisters often before. That's the way many professional's do it too (check out the Senske brothers ADG company from Texas). It makes for a very easy to service and completely hidded setup.

Be careful, though, that the tank bottom isn't tempered glass as that will shatter when it is drilled. It's often best to just order the tank drilled as you like it.

Eheim's are metric. 16/22 is ID OD in MM.
