1/2" i.d. clear hose for the return and 5/8" i.d. for the drain works the same. I get mine at Lowes. make sure you get the thin walled. I tried the thick walled tubing and it would not work.
I did the same thing. Used the Lowe's tubing. It will fit on the connecter barbs well enough, but since the walls are thinner than the Eheim tubing the retaining rings don't tighten down on it very much, if at all. You may want to use hose clamps to be on the safe side. Also, it will collapse and kink much easier. You can make it work, but the Eheim brand or something with a similar wall thickness would work better.
