I can only tell you this. I am still confused by the setting and I have 4 of them! One thing for sure, once set, they are FANTASTIC heaters. Tops in my book!
I just set mine where i thought the right temp is and wait a day. Then you are supposed to fine tune it with the outer ring +/-8 degrees I think. I got lucky with mine at 84 on the second try so I left it alone.
old style is much better IMO I have it set at 81 and it keeps my water at 81 that's it no need to mess with calibration I guess it's just a nice feture to have for some...

I think, and I may be wrong, that the dual ring allows the heater to "know" the actual real world temperature of the tank, thereby allowing for exact temperature settings.
I have one that is right on. I have another one that is 5 degrees below the maximum correction that the red ring will let me do. I have to just turn it up 5 degrees higher
