So I have an eheim jager, I think either 125 or 150w, had it for awhile in a 25 gallon tub and set it to (I think) 80. Didn't check the temp on it but it felt like it was doing enough and the fish were happy. Today I put it in a 40B, set it to 86, didn't feel like 86, so I crank it to 88 and pop a thermometer in there, thermometer says 82. Do I just give it a bit? It's been in there for a total of 9 hours heating up from room temp. If not I can pop it in another tank that doesn't need the heat and throw a brand new one in.

There's something wrong with it. A 125watt should have brought it up to temperature in less than 9 hours. When was the last time you calibrated it?

Calibrated it around 4 hours in.

Reasonable sized tank like that, and a small heater? What's the room temp? I wouldn't be surprised it's struggling get the tank up that hot.

Room temp is around 70

so after 14 hours of having the new one in and set to 87, I got it to 84. Is the heater just too small? I thought the 125 was for 50 gallons.

Actually I should say the tank at room temp is 70, room temp is like 80 something
How is the tank temperature at 70F while the room temperature is at 80F? Do you have a chiller on the tank to get it 10 degrees below current room temperature or does it get cold at night and the room temperature drops to less than 70F, and then the room temperature rises to 80F during the day?

Is this a 50g glass tank?

I have no clue
It isn't a consistent 80 it drops a bit at night but my room has 4 windows and is basically a greenhouse for the sun lit hours of the day

I'm assuming the temperature of the room drops below 70F at night. The heater you have right now is rated for exactly a 52g, so either the heater is not working properly or it is constantly fighting the night temperature drops, hence the reason for it taking so long to heat the tank and keep it there. Most heaters are rated for a 10-15 degree room temperature vs tank temperature difference. Once you go beyond that swing, you need a larger heater or a second heater.

I would get a second heater for the tank.
