Finally got the Eheim 2260 up and running, and while the pump is nice and quiet, the jet pipe is whistling dixie.

If you stick a finger in the water, you can change the pitch based on which hole you cover. It would be funny if it were someone else's problem.

I did cut an inch off the pipe so it would fit in the tank. Did I just create a fish flutophone? Can I fix this, maybe by drilling the holes larger?

I would try drilling the holes slightly larger. I've done that with no problems.

An update in case anyone else stumbles across this problem:

My BIL has a masters in physics and did his research on pipe pressures and harmonics, so if anyone could fix this it would be him. We were tossing around ideas when we noticed that the noise stopped when the end hole was covered.

We stuffed a bit of old sheet in there, and it worked for about a day. The pressure compressed it and re-opened the hole, so we added more until the noise stopped permanently. Now that I know the proper amount, I cut new pieces and replace the old one whenever it starts to look grody.

Considering old rags were the solution, I guess my approach was a bit like bringing a gun to a knife fight. :duh:

Just curious, are you saying the hole size/placement cause a harmonic?
Or was it pulling air and really creating a “whistle” effect.
Either way, odd problem.
