1. I got a eheim pro II 2128 that I havent touched since the day I got it, which was about 1 year ago. After that long of a timeframe, should I replace any of the pads that catch gunk or anything? Or should I just rinse and hook it back up?

2. Would not cleaning a canister for that long be harmful to my tank whatsoever? I still do my weekly 30% waterchanges.

Chigga, the only pad you need to replace is the white pad. Well, if you're wondering which pad I'm talking about then it's the pad nearest to the pump. That pad is not reuseable and must be replace everytime you do filter maintainance. If you want to avoid buying expensive original Eheim pad you can go to CK Aquarium to get the China made pad for Jebao. They're precut to fit Eheim nicely. I have not try these pads yet but the next time I do Eheim maintainance I will give that a try. Another thing I do is I buy Marineland blue poly fiber from Petsmart and cut it up to the exact Eheim shape.

The rest of the media is reuseable and would require a good cleaning. Just make sure you rinse the Eheim pebbles in aquarium water so you do not kill off the bacteria. If you're hungry while doing filter maintainance then this stuff might look like Coco Puffs cereal to you.:D

Send me a PM if you still have questions. I have the Eheim 2026 and 2028.

aha thanks. Do you know if filter floss would work in place of the white pad? The filter floss in case you dont know how it looks like, looks very much like cotton balls. The ones you dab alcohol in to clean a wound =D

I've never replaced any of the filter pads in my eheims. Just rinse and re-use. I'd never use filter floss near the top of the canister as it will eventually become a blockage and possible damage the motor.

As for how often to clean a canister? Every 3 months or so? I usually use a sponge prefilter to help catch most of the gunk, so I let mine go a little longer.

I have a 2028, I clean the white pads every 5-6 months, then get new ones. I only clean them once, after that they seem to thin/ware out, you can definately see the difference with a new and an old.

The sponge in my 404 turned brown after about a week. I just rinse it out occasionally though. Filter floss, if you do use it, should be below other media so it doesn't get in the impeller. It will clog so quick that taking apart your canister once a week won't be worth it. HOBs are much better to use fine mechanical filter media in.
