i got an eheim pro3 2080 (rated for 320 gal.) complete with media set for my 72x18x18 (100gal) tank.

do i need to use a separate powerhead for aeration? it seems like the included rainbar doesn't do much. i saw my fish gasping for air after leaving just the eheim pro3 running for around 8 hours. i plugged in a powerhead just to add circulation and aeration and the fish calmed down in comfort.

is there some accessory that i should add? or did i install the rainbar wrongly? i installed it on the middle part of the rear glass panel flowing towards the front. i could hardly see any bubbles (i presume bubbles are indication of aeration) and no circulation at all.

need some help guys!

thanks!

Hey Rob,

mmm strange, the eheim should provide plenty of aeration for you tank. Is your tank cycled before you added your fish?

It would have to look something like this:

If it doesn't, reconnect the filter (stop it, disconnect, reconnect) and see if it inproves.

Cheers

thanks for the very quick response.

i just replaced an existing overhead filter so i guess it was cycled.

what i did was, i took out the overhaed filter and continued on setting up the pro2 2080.

where should the holes of the rain bar be aimed?

how many outlets do you have for the water coming from the canister?

and also, the suction seems to not do a good job. i could see little particle floating past/accross the suction strainer, i was expecting the filter to suck stuff like a vaccum. is this normal?

should have been - what i did was, i took out the overhaed filter and continued on setting up the pro3 2080.

Howdy & Welcome to MFK,

My 2080 is circulating a 220 gal tank all by itself. You should be more than fine. Also, both outlets should have sufficient power to catch floaties. Make sure that the hoses of both outlets are filled with water!!! Make sure that the flow regulator is wide open. If extra aeration is needed, position the spray bar above the water surface. If you use CO2 fertilization, take into account that aeration will reduce CO2 levels.
