I recently was changing some of my plumbing and decided to replumb my Eheim 2215 which I use to run water to a heat exchanger and back to the tank. In an effort to save a few bucks I just picked up 1/2" tubing from Home Depot and plumbed everything up. What I quickly realized is that the Eheim quick connect fittings do not tightly secure the 1/2" ID tubing. Since the plumbing for this setup requires ~15 feet of tubing I really didn't want to have to purchase all Eheim 12/16 tubing so I just purchased a few feet of Eheim 12/16 tubing and some 1/2" tubing couplers and hose clamps. This way I can use the Eheim tubing at all of the quick connect junctions and then transition to cheaper conventional tubing.

Moral of the story:
Eheim quick connect fittings perform better with Eheim specific or metric sized tubing.

I believe Eheim also make barb hose reducer which will reduce to 1/2". I got one I can sell to you if you need.

I think the real issue is locating silicone hose. That is why the Eheim hose is so soft and why they supply special hose clamps. It is great hose and won't get hard with age.

dont forget Eheim charge an arm and a leg for their hose. I found some green hose at the salt water store which is just as good as Eheim hose. I love Eheim stuffs but at the same time I think they are over charging.

Hmm... I've had my Eheim 2215 set up going on 8 years now with Home Depot 1/2" ID vinyl tubing. My 2217 is plumbed with HD 5/8" tubing. Can't recall but that one has been set up for at least 6 years. Never an issue. The trick is to use a hose clamp at each connection and cinch it up nice and tight.

You are correct Daddieo. Word of caution. The Eheim hose is silicone which is very soft. If you use regular worm gear clamps they can easily cut the hose. The special clamps that Eheim supplies are not easy to find but they are better and can't damage the hose.

Im amazed that anyone is having luck with non-metric hose.

Seriously not worth the effort or hassle. Eheim hose is amazing - and not that expensive.

I made the mistake of replumbing one once with non-metric, and lets just say I wont ever do that again.
