Hi,

I'm currently running an Eheim 2217 on my 80 gallon tank. Was thinking of getting a small Eheim sub-filter that I saw in my LFS to increase the total volume of bio-filtration. From what I understand, the sub-filter is simply an empty canister, whereby water from the tank flows in from the inlet, and the outlet is connected to the main filter. Anyone has any experience with such a setup. I'm really interested in getting one but am not sure whether it is feasible and whether my existing filter has enough "power"" to enable the whole system to work.

Cheers! :)

I'm not sure which model filter you are referring to as a sub-filter. Unless you are asking about a submersible in tank filter.

Just connect the output of the Eheim 2217 into an overhead filter full of bio-media. The media will be exposed to the air similar to a wet dry filter. Depending on how much media you put into whatever container you use it might be more bio-filtration then your actual 2217.
