eheim substrate pro?

i am getting an eheim ecco 2234 filter and it comes with a free substrate pro bio media. i was wondering if i had to replace this atleast once a month or so or is it like the bio wheel which becomes better as it lasts?

Substrat pro is a bio media. You can replace it, but do not replace more than half of the total at once. This is where the primary bulk of your benificial bacteria live. If you get rid of that sludge that is all over the bio-media, you will have to re-cycle your tank. It is a great media that you are getting, so I'd just stick with it.

I have two 2250s full of this stuff (and thats alot). You dont have to replace it. It gets better as it matures. When it gets dirty, just rinse it in some tank water. Its nice because the design is rounded, so not alot of crap gets caught up in it. Besides replacing this stuff would be pricey.

i use this too its good stuff and recommend it and no need to replace
