By the Beach!
I'm planning on setting up a 60g tank for my Gymnogeophagus n. sp. "Sequeira" (ex meridionalis) sold to me as G. "Norte". I am trying to set up a tank with species also found in northern Uruguay. What I need help with is the amount and type of fish that can peacefully live in a tank of this size. I already have 3 males. The tank dimensions are 36"x15.5"x25"tall, I'll have a eheim 2076 for filtration, and lighting has yet to be decided.

Here is my stock list:

3 G. Norte + how many more?
6+ Corydoras paleatus or Corydoras aeneus
1 pleco (maybe)

This is it so far so any help would be greatly appreciated! I also read that Apistogramma borellii can tolerate colder temps so would they be alright to add to the list?

What temps are You using? 60's? 70's? I don't think that Apisto would do well long term that cold, (60's).

I would look to a differing type of Gymno, like a Paso Pache I, do the Corys, but make em a lil bigger then standard, the Gymmie will pick if they are too small, I know this by experience. No Plecos, but Dojo Loaches are great....I controll my Alega by using some snails, and if they get crazy, I pluck a few out and throw them to my Loaches who go crazy for them (In another Tank)

I was planning on keeping the fish at about 70 for most of the year and then cool them down to the low 60s for about 3 months. As for the A. borellii I read an article that people have collected them in water that was 44F. But I have no experience with these guys.

My main concern with other gymnos is cross breeding. My lfs doesnt have paso pache I but they do have G. meridionalis, would that work? Also are there any geos that could do the size of the tank and the lower water temps?

Also how many gymnos/corys can I get away with in a 60g? Plus should I be concerned about a sex ratio for the gymnos? Thanks!

Some goodieds would be good. Also, I usually mix a mouthbrooding gymno with a substrate spawner.

What are those? I've never heard of them? Are they in the gymnogeo genius?

Sexing Gymmie is not easy, Renegade would be better at that question, I would agree, a nice 1M - 3 or 4F is nicer, My Paso have taught me that, but I have found if you have lots of floor space, you can be ok, 4' minimum, a 55 is nice. A 75 is ideal.....for 3-5 of one species, and 3-5 of the Paso's. IMHO.....It has worked for me, 45 for now, 55 soon, 75 eventually.

I have this in my 45 (75 footprint)

[FONT=&quot]5x-Gymnogeophagus n. sp.paso pasche I "Rio Santa Lucia"
5x-Gymnogeophagus n. sp.blue neon "Valentines"
6x-Corydoras paleatus (Peppered Cory)
2x-Corydoras aeneus (Bronze)
7x-Swordtails – WC – Montezuma Strain
1x-Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (Golden Dojo Loach)

At a 68-73 (High now) temp, moving to a 55.

Goods are a nice livebearer, great choice, I forgot that, I use Mont Swordtails, and they are great, I have 7 in a dithers, and they are huge.

The norte are (rhabdtous-type) substrate spawners and will pair off (like convicts). It's best to start off with a group of juvies and let them choose.

The mouthbrooders (G. gymnogenys and labiatus) do best with a male and several females.

I use Buenos Aires tetras, Ameca splendens (goodeid), Ilyodon, Xenoteca, and other goodeids as dithers. They like cooler water...
