I was given 5 fry a few months ago and got told they were electric blue acaras but now they are about 2inchs big, I am questioning if they are proper electric blue acaras..

They look different to the ones I see in my local fish shops, hoping experts here can verify for me!

Not sure which are male/female but there does seem to be a pair that's formed but other times it seems like a 3sum is going on

Brilliant, thanks for the confirmations. I will try getting pictures of the ones in my local LFS as they don't look like mine!

Been a long time lurker on this forum and finally signed up to ask this question, much respect to everyone for sharing info and pics over the years

Definitely Electric Blue Acara.

Could you be thinking Electric Blue Jack Dempsey or Electric Blue Rams?

Nope, they are labelled as electric blue acaras, they are kind of black and blue, l get a pic when I go later this week, even their electric blue rams are different to what you posted!

Pet stores label stuff wrong all the time. You have electric blues. Wild-form blue acaras look like this:

Of course a lot of the LFS fish are suspect too because blue acaras (Andinoacara pulcher) and green terrors (A. rivulatus) will readily hybridize, and there's a good chance the farm-raised ones are mutts after generations of pond breeding.

There are also several more recognized species of Andinoacara now than there were in the early years of the hobby, so the blue acara label could apply to several other fish as well. See here:

Nope none of the above but I am happy that mine are authentic!! Edit, thanks for the video above the regular blue acaras are nice too but not seen them so vivid in colour here, they are very washed out in comparison

Another quick question, is it the female that goes pale with a black horizontal line on its body? Or do both male and female do this?

I've been told the males have a larger dorsal fin but I honesty cant tell the difference between them but I have noticed that 2 of the five do what I described above.

I have 5 but only want a breeding pair lol hence asking, thanks in advamce
