I wasn't sure how best to introduce the idea so I went with the wind.

I tried searching for what I could find on Ahli's in breeding with just that search word but didn't see anything like what happenned recently. Please don't think I'm terrible for what I did because honestly, I've never tried to put myself in the situation I found myself in so I was both surprised and very sad when I realized what happenned. I still am.

I have an electric blue ahli living with a pleco. That's it. My wife cleaned the tank a few weeks ago and I guess that triggered it but either way, the fish laid eggs and began mouth brooding. I am not home that often because I work a lot. Our tank maintenance is not very good either because the baby keeps us going and going. Anyways, the tank settled and I noticed the jaw on my ahli growing. I thought maybe the fish was changing structurally as fish will elongate and so forth as they reach adult size. Our fish is stuck at 2" because our feeding also is low. About once every two or three days. The jaw on the fish kept swelling and I noticed that the gills were red. I also noticed that the fish was swimming to keep her jaw up. I thought to myself it was case of ick I let go too far before noticing. I got a saltwater bath ready after work one night and got ready to kill some ick. Why did 15-20 eggs go everywhere?! It was like hungry hungry hippo in reverse. Speaking of reverse, all of the eggs were aborted. She wouldn't take them back and I'm sure it wouldn't have made a difference if they're too fragile for a saltwater bath. It was a big face palm when I found out I was watching mouth brooding. I wish I had known that was going to happen so I could have not aborted every last egg.

My only hope is that unfertilized eggs aren't potential lives. I hope that they were unfertilized as the only other fish was a pleco. I thought that a pleco and ahli would not be a pair so I'm thinking the eggs were laid and nothing really happenned. Can anyone tell me what to expect if I magically have this happen again? Did I almost have hybrid fish? I promise pics if my fish gives me another chance.

Would there be any problem with leaving her on her own? Hadn't planned to add fish and need the setup cleaner if I do. Also, should she be bigger tp be having eggs lay? Not sure if she is using valuable nutrients that need to be kept.
