i was wondering how long it took your blue dempseys to get past the 3 inch mark. what did you feed them and what were they housed in/with? if possible, can you please post some pics? any extra info is appreciated, thanks.:)

took mine 2 years to reach 5". IT was housed by itself for a long time, except for a clown pleco. I put it in a tank with my Retic ray, clown knife, glass knife, and a few JD females(trying to breed) and it died a few weeks after.. theyre very weak in my experience... but they look amazing!

They are amazing, but I have heard they do have a high rate of death. We have them at the store, but I don't think I am going to get one. I think they must have a lot of recessive traits that were aquired through inbreeding to bring out those amazing colors.

AGREED... mine got beat up very badly all the fins were ripped off and its scales were ripped off too, by a mean cichlid... I came home to this.. i immediatly put the fish in a spare 10G and then watched and waited.. the fish was actually laying on its side for a loong time(people always told me "your fish is dead man throw it out" "theres no chance you could save it, just flush it" I showed them all up on that one.. the fishn wouldnt swim alot if at all... the little guy never gave up tho... and he came out like that. The camera brings out alot of green in every picture... poor BLUE, i miss that fish.. was very cool, he recognized me, no doubt about it.

Took mine about 4 or 5 months to get passed the 3" mark after buying it as a .5-1" juvie

Kept it in a 29g community at first, then once it was 4", moved it to the 180g where it's been ever since.

Oh, and I started it off on thawed bloodworms and tetramin flake. As it grew larger, added freeze-dried tubifex, floating cichlid pellets, live ghost shrimp, and once in a while some feeder guppies and minnows.

I've stopped feeding live food as I'm tired of ich outbreaks (he/she? has survived two bouts with ich and treatment thereafter).
