I just went in to the living room to check on my fish and was counting them and making sure they all looked ok. I kept coming up one short on my african cichlid tank! I checked everywhere in the tank and couldn't find him. So I started looking around on the floor and sure enough I found him behind the tank! I have a cover on the tank but there was a 3" gap beside the filter. I now have that covered with the plastic attachment. I opened up the stand and reached back and picked him up. I thought for sure he was dead but then noticed his gills moving! So I rushed to the sink and gave him a very good rinsing. My turtle is currently in my sick tank so I had to put him back in with the other fish. I dosed the tank with Prime. He is swimming around good and acting ok but his color is really messed up. His right eye is a little cloudy also. Should I dose the tank with aquarium salt too? I attached some pictures of him after the jump and the last one is of him before the jump.

Any suggestions on what I can do to help him recover?

I wanted to do a water change today. Is this going to stress him too much? I have some melafix should I remove the carbon from the filter and add some to the tank? Please, someone give me some suggestions. I don't want to lose this fish.

Well I don't know if I did the right thing but at least I did something. I went ahead and did the water change. Double dosed on the Prime, and added aqua safe. I took the carbon out of the filter and added melafix. Now I'm adding aquarium salt disolved in water to the tank. I only had about 1 1/2 tablespoons of the aquarium salt but maybe it will help. His color is improving but he is keeping his right fin clamped.

Sounds like you did it right.
Do some small waterchanges the next few days, not too much, dont need to stress the lil guy any further.

Nice first aid by the way =)

Thank you for responding. I was beginning to think no one would. lol He is looking better. His color is improving and he doesn't seem to be stressed. I'm concerned about the skin irritation from the carpet. I'm hoping that the melafix will take care of this. I fed around 1pm and I believe he did grab a pellet or two. So hopefully I caught it in time and he will be ok. Thanks again.

sounds like youre doing the right thing-im thinking his slime coat is rubbed off in some places and damaged-give him a few days and he will look better. I have noticed with jumpers that they look really rough for a few days, but usually recover.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. That's why I double dosed on the prime and added the little bit of salt that I had. I know those are supposed to help with the slime coat. I really appreciate your input ladies.

Hows the lil one doing so far?

He's doing great today. His color is almost back to normal. His fins are a little worse for the wear but the melafix and good water changes should take care of that. I'm going to give another dose of melafix tomorrow and then do a good water change. I was holding off on the water change because of the melafix.

Glad to hear hes doing better =)
