I've been thinking about getting a EBJD for my 120 gallon tank but wanted to get everyones opionion on them. The more I read about them, I am finding out they tend to die for no reason and are hard to raise too full grown adults. One of the things I really like about them is first their color but also that they seem to be alittle less aggressive.

Right now in my 120 I have a Severum(5in), Jurupari(5in), and 5 Clown Loaches (rangeing from 2-7in). Do you think I would be ok adding a regular Dempsey? I am wanting to add color to the tank and thought I would achieve that with the EBJD, but now am thinking the regular JD might work just as well.

i would recommend that if you go with an ebjd, get from a reputable breeder, secondly, get one at about 3-4 inches, they are more stable and hardy after they reach that size. reg jds are nice but if you want a show fish, get an ebjd. also, ebjds can be just as aggresive as reg jds, mine was the most aggressive dempsey ive ever had

yes a regular JD would work.. not a EBJD.

I have only owned two but I have had different experiences with them than what many have. I had one in 2006 bought him at 3 inches and raised him to 5 with zero issues I traded him in as I was changing up the tank he was in. I currently have one I bought at half an inch and he is now over an inch and once again never an issue. That being said I am concerned with the little guy as I never knew about these issues until after I bought him.

IMO, I wouldn't put an EBJD in a cichlid community tank unles he was the biggest cichlid and nothing any more aggressive than him. If you could get a 5" EBJD it would be worth a try

I've noticed that if you get an EBJD that is over 3" you are good to go. Most of the EBJD deaths are from fish under 3". With that said I agree that you should be sure that your EBJD is one of the largest and doesn't get bullied by the other fish in the tank. Stress does them in. My EBJD is 4" and is not the largest fish in the tank but he is not bullied at all. Like all fish some EBJDs are more aggressive than others. Good luck with whatever you decide to do and if you do decide to get an EBJD I want to see pictures!!

You should be ok in a 120 with a sev and a jurupari , they're not your'e typical aggressive cichlids and thats good space for that stock . that said , i would get the biggest one i could , at least 4 inches , and make sure you have hiding places etc , and keep an eye on them .
