I'm looking for suggestions on good
Tank mates my ebjd. I understand fish get into it but I'd like to have a peaceful tank. I also know ebjd are not the nicest guys but he got beat up pretty bad so I have a soft spot for him

Speaking from my personal experience, he is better off alone or with a mate. My ebjd fights with all the fish I've tried to put in. Maybe because I've only tried semi peaceful fish like balloon rams. He is doing great with 2 plecos. A L239 and a bristlenose lol

IME, the three regions have largely different aggression a levels. SA cichlids tend to be the least aggressive, Africans are very aggressive while CA (including jacks) fall somewhere in between. Now this is just a generalization and there are of course exceptions in every category, but I feel this is a fairly accurate generalization. As jacks are a large CA cichlid, they can be quite aggressive. EBJDs do tend to be much more peaceful than their normal jack siblings, but sometimes finding them suitable tankmates can be a challenge.

In a 55, there isn't room for more than one other cichlid. I would add a firemouth and some top dwelling, deep bodied dithers and call it done. You could also add a convict instead of a firemouth. Both are CA cichlids that are smaller than EBJDs and should be suitable tankmates. Keep in mind all cichlids have different personalities and even smaller cichlids can be bullies. Just make sure there is plenty of decor to break line of site and keep an eye on potential aggression. How big is your EBJD?

Plecos seem to be widely ignored by all cichlids. I have rarely seen a cichlid go after a pleco unless the pleco would fit in their mouth or the pleco was trying to suck on the cichlid.

You could try those similar to convicts:HRP, sajica, cutteri

My EBJD is semi aggressive he chases and flares up at fish, he currently lives with a Severum and a juve Jaguar. He has also lived with Geophasus 'Red Head' Tapajos although he did chase them a bit when it came to feeding.

I always think it depends on the fish, i would not be scared to try anything but always have a back up just in-case.

Good advice on experimenting, yet having a back-up plan.

In a 55 I would not recommend any of the species listed here unless you intend to upgrade. I would never recommend a jag personally, but stranger things have worked. LOL

You think Africans are more aggressive than South American cichlids, and even Central American cichlids? I definitely do not agree with that idea. Sure every genus and species is different but typically, I doubt that idea.

It has been my experience that Africans tend to be the most aggressive of the three regions with CA in the middle and SAs being the least aggressive. This is just my opinion based on my experiences with these fish and speaking with fiends who keep other species of fish.
