I already plan to upgrade as soon as possible or if needed sooner but.. I got an electric catfish and was under the impression they are fairly slow growers. Mine was about four inches when I got it 2 months ago from the LFS. It was there for several months, never noticeably growing. Then we brought it home.
It's in a 55g with sand substrate plus rocks/wood/PVC pipe and a few plants.
It's built many hideouts under all our decorations and has quite taken to regular feedings and his new habitat.
Problem is, he's grown a good 2 inches and fattened up considerably in just these two months and I'm nervous he'll outgrow his tank before we buy a house..
Would not being fed at the LFS and now being well fed account for such a spurt? I figure that's most likely. He'd only hide behind a tube for the undergravel filter at the LFS not even coming out during feedings most of the time. Now he eats at least twice a day and he is so obviously growing and plump.. How fast can/do they typically grow?
In a 55g at 78F, fully cycled ammonia/nitrite 0, nitrites negligible, all the burrows he wants and twice daily feedings- can he stay here for another couple of years or do I need to start planning already??

He's about 6 1/2" long, maybe a bit more. Grown 2" in a couple months.
He was NOT this thick when we got him, he was skinny, then he hit "happy cat status" in my eyes now he just looks huge.. around. Like, round. In 2 years, maybe sooner, I can upgrade.. Currently his tankmates are 5 glass cats, 2 weather loaches, 1 syno. petricola.
Hoping for just reassurance, can these live together for up to 2 years if we don't get a house soon?
The 'lectric cat DID eat 3 glass cats when we first put them in. He was also underfed at the LFS and since I started feeding predator pellets he's left all the other fish alone. Except, the syno follows him around. Can't explain it, but this one inch syno FOLLOWS him and is never more than a few inches away. The syno follows him even above wherever he is in the 3 foot PVC pipe in the back of the tank.
So, Thoughts?
Ideas?
Can't expand much in my 2nd floor apartment, planning on a house and a LARGE tank for himself eventually. Just worried about such fast growth. Didn't plan for that.
Any advice/suggestions appreciated!

Nice looking electric cat, he can stay in a 55 for a longer period of time...

As a previous owner of a "lectric cat, they pretty much like to make the other fish dance in pain... The glass cats are always under risk, especially with the electricity this catfish holds...

Good luck!

Also, I feel I should say I WAS going to return the 2 weather loaches but the cat crippled one of them with a shock and *I thought* ate the other. One is paralyzed from the first half down (both are about 5" long) and both go in and out of the cat's hideouts. Now with the electric cat well fed they all live peacefully. Loaches in and out of his hideouts still.

Thanks ocean!
Glass cats are "pretty factor" according to my husband. The 'lectric cat ate 3 the first week we had them all. We've been down to 5 for a while now, we figure they're food if he feels the need but I feed him and the other cats seem happy to stay out of his way. The feeder guppies especially seem to enjoy that I feed my catfish well.

K, thanks again. I still have the residents and most of my feeder guppies living peacefully. This guy is growing crazy fast though, he's noticeably longer since I've posted this.
Could being unfed at the LFS "store" his growth spurts until now being well fed, like saving them for the opportunity? That seems to be what it's done.
I'm breeding guppies in a 10G fir future feedings but the cat honestly seems to prefer his various pellets.
The Syno. cat still follows him, too. And more and more the weather loaches seem less afraid of him. It's weird, like everyone has agreed to live together despite all the problems I expect. (namely, everything in the tank being eaten or injured)
The one loach he paralyzed has adopted a favorite "hiding spot" right next to the electric cat's main exit. He's there most times I check the tank, before and after feedings. I find it all quite fascinating how they live together, still hoping other people can provide stories/growth rate experiences to add to my short story :)

electric cat should be fine in that size tank for awhile.. i would not worry about it.. they really do not require a big tank as they are sluggish.. but they do require being able to swim for exercise and keep water pristene.. also keep in mind... that any stress could cause your EC to give off a charge and kill all those other fish.. the older he gets the more powerful his charge..i have one too.. about the same size..also try not to overfeed him.. be careful of this.. in my opinion they can get stopped up quickly..constipation could be fatal as it happened to my other e-cat.. i feed alot less now..He is a beauty....

I love the look when they're wiskers are up... they must be happy...

I find growth beyond 12" really slow...should be fine for a while.
