ok I am new to the whole cat fish thing how ever not new with keeping monster fish can anyone give me the tank requirements, feed , and tank mates?? thanx
I've posted several topics about E cats that you can find in the search pretty easily. However since I love E cats I'll post some more
The only tank mates I know of that will last and not get fried are synodontis specie catfish. They are native to the same river system as e cats are and to my knowledge are the only fish immune to the e cats discharge other then other e cats.
They can get to about 3ft I believe however I haven't heard of one over about 16" in captivity or seen any pics of any over about 12". I kept a 10" e cat with 3 synodontis multipunctatus and 2 synodontis flavitaeniatus with no problems.
Water parameters I would say about 74-82 with moderately high ph of 7-8 with hard water just like any african cichlid tank. Food wise I would go with beef heart, night crawlers, or blood worms. I've also read that they prefer slate over wood however I kept large driftwood pieces in my tank and the e cat seemed to enjoy that just much if not more then the limestone cave I built in the tank for him.
Be warned, they can shock you, although I've never experienced it personally, I had a friend who for whatever reason wanted to see how bad it was... It was enough on my 10" e cat to make him scream some profanity and pull his hand out quickly almost knocking off the lid to my tank, ie not a fun time. I believe that the tendency to shock and be aggressive towards tankmates depends greatly on your specific fish. If you have any other questions feel free to ask or pm me ~Trent
i have 8 red bellies and am looking for something that can survive and help clean my tank. Is an e cat an option or will it just kill my fish. They are all about 6"+

RBP's? If so nooooo, I had a rtsxtsn and he ate all three of my bala sharks in three nights that were only 1.5" smaller than him, then he would throw them up.
