I just saw a south American electric eel for 80$.Do you have any info on them and would they do good with large south American cichlids.

They dont go with anything else in the tank. They form a great personality when they settle in. Very easy to feed frozen food to, dont use a metal handle or else:shocked: .

what kind of tank do you need to house these eels? I would like to get a few and invite a few people over to play bobbing for bear cans... :D

but seriously what kind of tank do you need for these guys?

Probably 200 gallon, they grow to 7 feet:WHOA:

Are you thinking straight?
Try adding another two '0's onto that. But yeah, they grow near 7 foot and big adults can kill a human, pumping out 300 volts. If you ever need to handle a largish one, prod it with a plastic or wooden net of some sort or anything so it discharges most of the electricity from the organ it comes from.

I highly advise that you do not keep these unless you plan to have a tank like JohnPTC. These fish, if housed with others wil most likely kill them when bigger. They sneak up to them and just pump them with volts upon volts, then eat the deads fish. They might be ok upto 12" but I would put them into thier own tank after 12".

"Electric Eel." Encyclopedia Britannica. Britannica. 1997: 426.
"the shock … can measure up to 650 volts"
