Would it be safe to have an electric eel in a setup with a big barrel filter hooked up to multiple tanks? Would the electricity travel all the way through the pipes and filter into another tank and bother the fish?

Water conducts electricity very well, so I would assume its a bad idea.

From some quick searching, looks like an adult can push out around 600 volts and 1 amp; plumbing everything together basically gives that a path to distribute through.

1 amp can be lethal to humans by the way.

this is neither here nor there but water is not a good conductor its the metals and minerals
in the water that conducts the electricity.. pure distilled water is a terrible conductor.

but i would say it is definitely possible just dont know how much "shock" would be lost in the travel

I've cared for eels in systems with shared life support to several tanks, the eels activity never seemed to bother the other fish (apistos and dwarf pikes).

Why not make an experiment of it

I don't see it as an issue. When I had mine, during feeding I had speakers hooked up and you can definitely here the electrical pules rise, I had my hand in the tank on the other side and didn't feel a thing. I think those shocks are for close quarters only, it's not going to shock the entire tank, at least from my experience.

^ Now that's cool.
