.....thats a good question....
Are electric eels sensitive to meds? Mines got a BAD case of white spot, don't think its ich (if it is, its some SUPER ULTRA HYPER MEGA SAIYAN 5 ICH). Am usin Ich Attack cause its all natural and i use it for the sensitive stuff, but it doesnt seem to be workin. Any ideas?

What are your water parameters? Got a pic of said "white spots" ? I know they are touchy with some meds, but I'd have to go look back and see what was and wasn't ok to use.

Water is 7.2ph, 82degrees, filtered by 1 hydro sponge 5 and an emperor 300 power filter.
The water is changed 50% twice a week. Tried to get a good pic but 50 shots later, I give up. Couldnt see anything anyway. Looks just like ich (spots same size) but in a day, it just covered the eel. clouded eyes and all.

damn, 50% 2x a week... thats a hell of a lot... not even giving good bac time to establish...
try 10% 1x a week. clean 1half real well, and don't touch the otherside. then following week do the other side, and just keep going back and forth...
all scaless fish and inverts are sensitive. usually anything that contains a metal is out of the question. you could try melafix and its counterpart should be safe, but not sure if it will help with what your fish has

Electric eels are as sensitive to meds as most scaleless fish are. Any treatment specificly designed for scaleless fish will be safe for use with them.

"Ich" cases in Electric eels however are a tricky thing. Whatever species or whatever parasite it is that causes an ich like appearance in these fish is very much like you discribed SUPER ULTRA HYPER MEGA SATAN ICH...This parasite does not seem to react to treatments quite the same as "normal" Ich does..It seems to be very resiliant.

What I would suggest is a treatment using one of the over the counter scaleless fish ich meds along with very heavy water changes every other day (85 to 90%). Raise the temp to arond 85 to 90 over the coarse of the treatment and be sure you are matching this temp when returning the water during water changes.

The above worked for me a couple of times now...

I would be interested in seeing some pics of your fish as well as seeing how well the treatment you decide upon works out.

Good luck with this!

Would like to post pics but sadly it was dead when I woke up this morning:( What a thing to wake up to on x-mas. Anyway, last night before I went to sleep, I checked to see if the meds were ok with the eel ( I use Melafix and Ich attack) and it was covered in bloody spots! Did a 25% water change and hoped for the best but I guess.. Added a Uv sterilizer in yesterday but seems it was to late. Think I should leave it in there to sterilize the water for now?

sorry to hear about the eel loss

what else would u do with it? I plan on adding a uv sterl to my larger tank soon, and it will be run inline (w/canister filter)all day everyday.

thanks man. Usually I use the sterilizer 24/7 with the rays and discus, but i figured the eel needed it more to late. Plus i was kinda avoiding unhooking that UV thing from the filter.

water changes are not always a good thing, disease takes hold of a fish under times of stress for example during a water change. 50% once a week is the maximum, if you need to do more than that get a bigger tank and filter because your system cant cope. You need to post parameters such as ammonia nitrite and nitrate (one would assume they would be zero with that many water changes). Also messing with the filters like that is no good either. Only do it when it is a must, that means that when the filter is not pumping properly then it is becoming blocked up and needs to be cleaned. Open it up and only wash the sponges, because that is the only part that reduces flow. Leaving the other filter media alone will leave bacteria in there. After washing a filter out feed the fish as lightly as possible for the next week so that it produces the minimum waste.

What I think happened to your eel is that you removed too much bacteria so there was nothing to remove ammonia, nitrite. Then the bombardment of water changes stressed your fish even more. These two factors allowed the disease to take hold.

Ive found the most effective disease remedies are the ones that are course treatments (ie: add the treatment everyday for a week or whatever). These treatments generally say no water changes during treatment, so the chemical is not being removed from the tank.

If you dont know what the disease is give the fish a general purpose treatment for fungus AND bacteria. waiting to find out exactly what it is could mean the difference between life and death for your fish.
