My lfs just gave me a 1" EYC and I'm curious of others, if any, experience of them. From what I've read, they are the nicer cichlid. Current tank mates are a rope fish, mottled and delphax corys, bn pleco and a no id tetra that became fast bff's with the cichlid. Tank is currently 30g. Moving to a 75g in April with a 150 coming end of summer.

This is my very first cichlid and would love more than just basic Google info on this little guy. Any foods they enjoy outside of what Google sites list? I.e. c pellets, flakes, brine, bloodworms etc...

Thanks for any help :) oh, and anyone have knowledge if this EYC will be compatible with uj's?

No blood worms and rarely brine shrimp. A good quality pellet food is a good choice or flake food when smaller. Labidochromis caeruleus or yellow labs are omnivores but don't do well on meaty foods.

Is a uj's undergravel jets or something else?

I've not kept Malawi cichlids with any other fish except for Pimelodus pictus catfish or other Malawi cichlids.

I have a carnivorous rope fish so meaty foods go in the tank. Omnivores eat meat and vegetation but didn't know what types this one would enjoy. All of my fish are omnivore except the rope and they all love the bw's and brine. Fresh veggies are put in the tank daily as well, but again, not sure what the preference would be. Zucchini and cucumber are the favorite for the others.

Uj's.... upper jaws, referencing a class of bichirs.

My 75 and 150 tanks will be African tanks, mostly, because of the ropes. The cats in my current 30g won't be getting moved to those tanks because of the bichirs. Thanks for your input and information. :)

Hello,
The yellow labidochromis is an herbivore more or less, in the wild they eat mostly algae. They will be ok if they get a little meaty food here and there, but in excess it can lead to bloat in these fish. I would feed the lab pellets and prepared food mostly, vegetables are a good treat. Mine used to enjoy shelled peas quite a bit.

They enjoy living in groups, usually with 2-3 females to each male. I will caution that if you decide to do cichlids, the corys and tetra may be bullied/killed. In a 75 gallon you could do quite a few mbuna, 15-20 easily as adults. The yellow labs are one of the less-aggressive species, so I would be careful what other species you put with them.

Thank you for your info. Right now the corys are much bigger than the EYC. The corys aren't moving to the bigger tank due to the bichirs going in that one. They are definitely omnivores, he has been having a hay day hunting platy fry today and happily filling his tummy. I had no plans having a cichlid tank but fully amenable to it if they aren't the right size to live with the polys. I'll get some peas for him, he hasn't shown interest in cucumbers or zucchini. Thanks again :)
