Im sorry if this isnt in the right place, But what would be some good tank mates for these guys? Also how many should I get? Im able to get some fry for $1 each and was wondering how many I should get? Would they be fine with some small Bluegill? (The bluegill right now are 1")

Thanks for all and any help..

Tom

Bluegill? The kind you catch in the lake? Do some research first, Chiclids are a specialized fish and required special requirements. I can confidently tell you no, but Im no expert. I have over 20 Labs in my 90.

Yellow labs are good solid mbuna to start with. However those Bluegill perch are native species and should not be kept with Mbuna. Wrong biotype, wrong tank conditions etc.

Thanks to both of you.. Im just getting new to all of this so if some of my questions are stupid im sorry.. Ive been looking for a fish that eats live fish for food for my 55 gallon tank. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tom

I think if you are looking for a fish for a 55 gallon that eats live fish, you might be better off with a south american species. Sure there are some africans that will but they are larger and like to be in groups. They would need a larger tank than a 55 gallon.

Labs will eat fish but it's not good for them as a staple (or good for any fish really). Labs can get a condition called bloat from eating too many meaty foods.

^Hit the nail on the head. Pretty much all Mbuna and Tropheus require a diet high in spirulina due to their long digestive tracts and proneness to bloat.

I have bluegill & sunperch ( had them since they was about and inch long) in with my Africans (I also read somewhere that bluegill and sun perch are cousins of cichlids) for 3 years now in my 220g tank with zero problems. I'm not saying you should do that but its just from my stand point of veaw. I can post pics if need be.
