omnivore. I daily use a mix of different "cichlid" foods. flake, pellets, sinking. They seem to doing fine and breeding. I have quite a mix of Africans, though. It would be nice to hear if someone has a suggestion if they had just labs in a tank.
is any brand of cichlid food better then the other? How many times a day do you feed them? for the past couple of years i have been feeding all my fish Hikari Cichlid Gold. Now that I am getting into breeding I want to make sure I am feeding them right with the right food. What brands do you use? I also have two electric blues, one tropheus duboisi, one black ghost knife and two common pelco.
I feen HBH and NLS brand pellet foods. I feed Frozen Spirilla as a treat. Labs mainly eat Strains of algae and small insects in the wild. You want to stay away from super high protein diets and feed sparingly. Two small meals a day opposed to one large meal is ideal.
I do about the same, but also give them some live brine, some leave lettuce, shelled thawed peas and zucchini chunks. I rotate the treats week to week and double up once in a month or two
Try to stick to mainly spirulina based foods as their diet, in the lake, is mainly algae. Too much protein, together with a bit of stress, can result in bloat rather quickly. If you are wanting to breed then stay away from the colour enhancing foods that use artificial colouring too obtain this as they are basically male hormones.
I am busy looking into a food, Dainichi, that seems to be extremely good. Manufactured somewhere in CA I think. They have a web site you can order from. Worthwhile taking a look at it.
With HBH food I find the larger soft pellet gives off far too much oil. I use the smaller soft pellet to feed my fry after about 1-2 weeks.
What you can also do is cook up your own food. I cook Spinach, Zuchini and Peas till they are soft. To this I add some Spirulina powder, Garlic paste and some liquidised pink Prawns. Blend the lot together and put into small freezer bags that allow me to spread it out to about 1-2mm thickness. I feed this every Sunday afternoon to my fish. They love it.
