i went to this fish store and they had small almost 1 inch long cichlids... i can see they are kenyi cichlids.. but they seem a lot brighter than i have seen before... am i mistaking them for Demasoni cichlids..?? if so how can i tell the difference..?? .. then there were yellow coloured cichlids in the same tank..all about 1 inch long.. i always wanted an electric yellow but i coudnt see any black line on the top of the fin.. could it be male kenyis..?? but arent they too small for the colour change..??

The people in the fish store know nothing.. and i mean literally nothing.. all they know is that its a type of cichlid .. idiots..!! :irked:

Kenyi fry would be powder blue with black bars. Demasoni would be a darker blue with black bars. Yellow cichlids could be a low grade strain of yellow labs or some type of hybrid.

Don't even buy from there if they don't label and sell poor quality fish.

so to sum up.... if they are indeed electric yellow cichlids they should have the black stripe even if they are juveniles about 1 inch long..??

I bought several electric yellows and none of them developed the black fins until they grew a bit and then only some did. I bred Kenyi and the fry were all powder blue w/ stripes as already mentioned.

Not necessarily and some wont even get the black. Go back and grab a picture if your really unsure or find a store with some that have matured that way you know what your getting.

i bought a juvi kenyi, he was like how the others say, powder blue with black bars. he grew a tiny bit and has turned yellow (he's just at or slightly under an inch). the kenyi are stockier than yellow labs and demasoni. if you're really wondering post a pic and we'll try and identify it.

If they don't get the black they are pretty poor quality... I would look for a seller with fish that have thick black markings.
