Was wondering if it would be safe to put electrical tape around fluorescent lights for the tank light?

I have the lowest/dimmest light my lfs carries, but its still too bright for my del..

I have fixed up things with electrical tape before, ive had it in my old ps2 for 3 years, and it never melted or caught on fire, but im not sure if it will be the same for an actuall light?

So, will it be safe, or not? If not, is there any other tape i may be able to wrap around it without any melting or fires being started?

I would put in some floating plants, but my lfs doesnt sell any tat are supposed to float. i have to actually buy normal attached plants and then rig them up to float... which looks horrible in the tank..

So, any ideas?

Well, as i said, i havent done it yet, and was not going to untill i got a little feedback, problem was though that someone once told me to do that, i think on this site even..

Any other alternatives, or will i just need to make a lot of floating plants?

A very easy and effective way to dim a tank is to put sections of aluminum foil under the light on the tank top.

get a diffuser.

or you could paint your light housing black or a darker color so it absorbs more light rather than reflecting it back into your tank

Do you have glass lids or any lids at that. If so go to a car part store and get some window tint. Put that on your lids that way you can go as dark as you want. If electrical tape was able to go on the bulb it would be blacked out and at that point why turn the light on.

Tin foil wouldnt result in the frying of my fish? I am also looking for low cost solutions, i have tape and tin foil, and about 2 bucks in the bank..

it works fine as long as the light is florescent. It WILL however leave a really sticky residue that will not come off behind...been there...done that LOL

How would it fry your fish? It won't; it goes on the tank top, and doesn't get hot. Give it a shot. You will be happy with the ease and effectiveness. I used this method on a Piranha tank before.
