I am making a whiskey barrel pond for my wife tomorrow and had a question. We have outside outlets on or mobile home, but it is about 30 feet away from where she wants to place the small pond. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to power the filter with that outlet?

Hello; 30 feet is not a long run for a power chord, but you may want to consider a heavy duty wire. There are contractor grade extension chords with a thicker set of wires to carry the load. Thin wire chords can become very warm if the load is high.
I think there are also extension chords with built in GFI or other safety features.
Some of what you need will depend on the load of the equipment.
Are you considering burying the feed wire?

The guy at lowes said to bury an outdoor extension cord in pvc pipe so its out of the way of the mower. That ok?

Hello; Some will depend on if you want to go by local codes or just get by. Around here the codes specify the kind of wire, pipe and how deep to bury the wire (around two feet I was told). I looked at a place that had wire in a pipe just under the surface and the home inspector said it was not up to code. I would at least consider the use of a GFI outlet at the point where the pump will be plugged in to reduce the shock hazard.
Do you plan to tie into a dedicated circuit breaker?

It wont have a dedicated breaker until i get the big pond. It does have a gfi outlet. We are outside city limits so i was told codes are no problem

Hello; So, if you do not plan to follow what codes may exist, then the best I can think of is to use a chord with the thickest (greatest cross section) wires that you are willing to spend the money on.

I was told there were no codes to follow. Dunno if it was correct or not but I bought the thickest outdoor cord Lowes carried. I have yet to bury the cord but will do so this weekend. My wife decided to go with a pond kit instead of the barrel. I will post a pic if I can figure it out. It has been too long.

Edit: It is about 15 gallons.

Hello; I was not thinking on codes in terms of being legal or required, but as a guideline for how to run a wire in a safe manner. I also live out in a county and not in a city. There are codes for this sort of thing even if no one will do an inspection. Among other issues of shock hazard are things like what happens if some does not know of the buried wire and begins to dig with a metal shovel or such. Is it possible that children will be around the pool? Good luck.

It is only me, wife and stepdaughter and yard is gated and locked so kids are no problem. I bought the thickest PVC pipe Lowe's had so a shovel shouldnt be a problem. I dont believe the line is in danger of breaking unless someone starts digging with some heavy machinery.

I was thinking of putting a trio of bettas in there for the summer. Would the fountain cause too much water agitation for them to breed?
