Do a search for "Kill A Watt". It's a handy gadget you can use that tells you how much it cost to run certain items by plugging them into it.

How does the age of the house affect the electric bill?

As well as windows, single pane, dual pane, triple pane along with any gas filled in the windows.

And as Camshaft Ramrod mentioned, insulation newer homes have stricker minimums, some older homes can have less than half of what new homes require and some really older homes don't have any insulation. You cool heat your home but most of it ends up escaping through the walls/ceilings and you end up trying to heat cool your entire neighborhood, which isn't cheap. Same thing thing with AC unit, newer ones are more efficient, as well as duct work 'should' be tighter, doesn't help you and your family if your cooling/heating your attic because the ducts have leaks.

Your main culprits are, water heater, dryer, electric range, central or base board heating, vacuum. most likely water heater, once they start to go your heating bill will very noticeably increase.

Power bill last month was $118, in a two story house built in 1903 and no insulation in the floor single pane windows and cadet heating, and I live in the northwest. BTW that is really good power bill for a winter month for me.

Keep in mind some people may have all electric home or electric and gas. Water heaters from some maybe gas so that would not show up on the electric bill but the gas bill. Top energy user in the home comes from anything to do with heating and cooling your home. Then it comes down to your refridgerator, your water heater can cost money if its old or not set properly (set to high in the summer time when most people don;t use super hot water), then again it could be heater with gas which for me is cheaper. Electric range, oven, dryer, vaccum, for most people will not increase your electric bill very much because you are not using it as often or for long periods of time. Typically you heat and cool your home hours at a time each day.

Good points,my fish and I live in an older home that is heated with an oil boiler with radiators. In the warmer months I turn off all the tank heaters,I can get the bill down to about sixty five bucks but when those high wattage heaters come on 24/7 along with everything else the bill creeps up to one hundred dollars and this a three story house.
